On October 20th, we had to say goodbye to our beloved baby girl, Nina, who was almost 12 years old. She was so much more than just a dog to us. She was our family, my best friend and truly my whole world. Nina had recently been diagnosed with a large cancerous tumor on her spleen that had spread to her liver, and we were told she likely only had days to weeks left with us. I had been absolutely dreading having to make the decision to let her go and kept putting off scheduling anything because I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Unfortunately, the night before we lost her, she declined very quickly, and by the next morning, we just knew it was time. Nothing could have prepared me for having to make that decision. A good friend of mine recommended Dr. Sandy Jernigan, and I trusted her judgment. I am so incredibly thankful that I did. I called that morning and spoke with Beverly, who was honestly one of the kindest people I could have hoped to speak with in that moment. I could barely get through the conversation without crying, and she was so patient, compassionate and reassuring. I can’t explain how much that meant to me, especially considering the emotional state I was in. When we arrived, Nina had lost all mobility, so the staff came out with a stretcher and helped us get her inside. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Jernigan and her staff treated us and our baby girl with so much kindness and compassion. They made us feel comfortable, never rushed us and treated Nina as if she were their own. Dr. Jernigan took the time to explain everything beforehand and continued to walk us through what was happening during the process. She was so gentle with Nina and so incredibly understanding of what we were going through. I was able to hold my baby girl in my arms as she took her last breath, surrounded by her family. I don’t think there is any way to make an experience like this anything other than heartbreaking. It was, without a doubt, the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. But I can honestly say that Dr. Jernigan and her staff made an absolutely horrible situation as peaceful and comfortable as it possibly could have been. It’s only been two days, and I’m still struggling tremendously with losing her. I can barely talk about her without crying, and I’m having an extremely hard time adjusting to life without her. But even in the middle of all this grief, I felt compelled to write this review because I wanted others to know just how wonderful Dr. Jernigan and her staff were to us. The fact that they were able to accommodate us on such short notice was already something I was incredibly grateful for, but the genuine care and compassion we received went so far beyond that. I truly cannot say enough good things about Dr. Jernigan, Beverly and the entire staff. I am so thankful that my sweet girl’s final moments were spent surrounded by people who genuinely cared about her and understood just how much she meant to us. Thank you, Dr. Jernigan and everyone at Embrace Vet Care, from the bottom of my heart. You made one of the worst days of my life a little more bearable, and that’s something I will never forget.
